What is shoulder pad sign?

Shoulder pad sign is a physical examination finding in which there is a visible difference in the contour of the shoulders, giving the impression of a pad on one side. This can be seen in conditions that produce muscular atrophy in the area surrounding the shoulder joint, such as brachial plexus injuries, rotator cuff tears, and muscle dystrophies. The cause of shoulder pad sign is usually related to nerve or muscle damage, and it may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition. The diagnosis can be confirmed with imaging studies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or electromyography (EMG). Treatment depends on the underlying cause, and may include physical therapy, surgery, or medication.
